NEW YORK - MAY 2, 2018: Avery Dennison has announced that four emerging artists, three from the UK and one from the United States, are the winners of the 2018 Bright New Things Take Time Square, a global design competition which will see the winning work showcased at NYCxDESIGN. The competition, launched by the materials science company in partnership with Arts Thread, challenged students and recent graduates in art and design to reimagine everyday household objects using Avery Dennison graphic materials.

The Winning Artists

The winners of the Bright New Things Takes Times Square competition are:

●      Katie Smith, who studied Graphic and Communications Design at the University of Leeds (UK), used digitally edited photography of aluminum foil to transform a table top into a psychedelic design. Bright New Things Take Time Square

The winning works from the Bright New Things competition will form one of the most eye-catching exhibits at Design Pavilion during this year’s NYCxDESIGN. The objects the four winning artists reimagined are being showcased in a nine foot by nine foot glass cube as part of Design Pavilion.

New VelaTM Dynamic Display System technology will turn the cube’s glass walls into a digital display screen, cycling between rich color and videos of our artists at work. At intervals, the walls will become transparent to reveal the art within. As visitors walk around the cube, Avery Dennison JanelaTM smart-products platform will enable smart phones to connect directly to the installation, encouraging a QR code match-up and scan challenge, to unlock spot prizes throughout the day.

“We created “Bright New Things” with Arts Thread as a way discover some of the world’s most forward-thinking new designers and artists,” said Angus McGuffin, global creative director for Avery Dennison. “We’re looking specifically for people who have a gift for both concept and application—using the materials at hand to do extraordinary things. That combination of creativity with a deep working knowledge of materials, so that one enhances the other, is what Avery Dennison provides to designers worldwide every day.”

“We founded Arts Thread to provide students and recent graduates with a platform on which to showcase their work both online and offline to a wide range of brands and retailers. Avery Dennison has partnered with us from the beginning, and working with them on this project—with access to their incredible new technology, Vela™ Dynamic Display System — is a huge opportunity for our community of emerging creatives,” said Alex Brownless, Co-Founder and Co-President, Arts Thread.

The Bright New Things Takes Time Square will be lived streamed at http://www.averydennison.com/en/home/Campaign/bright-new-things.html during its entire run.
